This movie explains itself I think. In the scene where The Girlfriend tries to explain the landscape paintings she has made to the father he asks how he knows to feel sad if there is nobody in the painting who looks sad. She asks him to try and picture he is in the landscape, and how looking around at it would make him feel, she asks him to try and feel without being told how. This is a movie without direction, without villains or main characters. The woman has good intentions but pretentious thoughts, the man is hurt and desperate and they end up tearing each other apart for trying to find love. Or do they? That's what I thought when I put myself in the landscape. So as one who looked into the mirror/painting that is this film I ask you to do the same. Without direction without motivation or theme and take something out of it that you and only you can perceive. That is how I understand this film.

I'm thinking of ending things streaming. So I read some of your comments arguing against the perspective that our female lead is invented because it makes the film less interesting. I have to disagree with that. As a woman, the slow realization that her identity is entirely malleable, morphing to fit whatever narrative Jake wants or needs, was horrifying and entirely relatable. Jake's need to construct narratives, to fit his life into poetic and analyzable moments, extends to her as well. She is, of course, not entirely fake, she resists Jake at every turn, and has her own perspective that we follow, but eventually his need for control prevails. She morphs and shifts and follows him (to the barn to hear poignant tales about farm life, to eat ice cream in the middle of a blizzard, into the school house) because that is the story he is trying to tell and she becomes whatever he needs (a poet, a painter, a film critic, an expert on rabies) in whatever scene he is attempting to play out. Jake seems to be capable of understanding life only through media, and he forces everything to fit into that framework. And she becomes what he needs, as many women do in their relationships. I think this is a compelling reading, which does not negate the absurdism of the film. Her being a construct of Jake's/the janitor's mind (whatever that means in this kind of film) does not make her not real (whatever that means in this kind of film) and that seems to be as much the point as the breakdown in communication, or the horror of meeting a significant other's parents.

I could tell that the editing was the main reason for the foreboding, off-kilter feeling this film emanated in its first half (the second half has plenty of other things contributing to it. but it's always great to see a detailed breakdown like that! Concerning your video style, mind if I ask what made you start talking with the camera, rather than having just voice-over? I suppose it's less work to not have to edit footage to go with your voice for everything? If so, very understandable, but I would then consider setting up the camera in a way where you can talk more directly at it. Your face was often slightly cut off from the frame and the sideways position just seemed a bit awkward. Great video still and keep up the good work.
